Trainer Michael Dods looks to have a particularly strong hand in this year’s renewal of the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday September 21.
Not only does Michael train the 9-1 ante post favourite Dakota Gold but he also holds an entry with the fast improving four year-old Queens Gift who has shot up the weights by a massive 18lb after winning two races and being narrowly beaten by Judicial in the Listed Beverley Bullet last week.
At the moment William Hill have Queens Gift as a 20-1 chance but these odds will surely be slashed if Michael declares his filly for the £200,000 Ayr race.
Dakota Gold meanwhile lines up today (Sunday) in the Listed Garrowby Stakes at York as he goes for a fourth successive win.
One man who would dearly love to ride the winner of an Ayr Gold Cup is Irvine born Danny Tudhope and he is certain to be riding one of the more fancied horses in the race. He is retained by Clipper Logistsics whose Victory Day, winner of the Shergar Cup Sprint at Ascot last month, is 10-1 second favourite with the sponsors.
If Victory Day doesn’t run Danny will have the pick of the David O’Meara trained horses in the race including Summerghand, second to Dakota Gold in the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon.
There is more than £740,000 in prize-money at the this year’s William Hill Ayr Gold Cup Festival which kicks off on Thursday September 19 when the feature race is the £65,000 William Hill Doonside Cup, a Listed race which has been won by some very good horses in the past.
Friday’s action includes two Listed races – the Shadwell Stud/EBF Stallions Harry Rosebery Stakes and the Al Maktoum Cup Arran Scottish Fillies’ Sprint as well as the William Hill Ayr Bronze Cup.
In addition to the Gold Cup Saturday sees the running of Scotland’s only Group race, the William Hill Firth of Clyde Stakes and also the Silver Cup.
